The Society of Mangalore Africa Mission (SMAM) embarks on a new journey as Rev. Fr. Hilary Lobo takes the helm from its esteemed founder, Rev. Fr. Alwyn Michael Joseph D’Souza. This leadership transition marks a significant milestone in the society’s mission to serve and uplift communities in the Same Diocese of Tanzania.
Celebrating the Visionary Leadership of Rev. Fr. Alwyn D’Souza
Since its inception in 2004, SMAM has been a beacon of hope and faith under the visionary guidance of Rev. Fr. Alwyn D’Souza. Inspired by the papal call to share the gift of faith across borders, the Diocese of Mangalore embraced the challenge of missionary work in Tanzania. This initiative was a response to the words of Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore, who emphasized the diocese's discernment in exploring avenues for impactful service within the Same Diocese.
Fr. Alwyn’s leadership over the past two decades has been instrumental in establishing SMAM as a dynamic force for spiritual and social transformation. From fostering community development to addressing local needs, his unwavering commitment has left an indelible mark on both the Diocese of Mangalore and the communities of Same Diocese.

A Legacy of Faith and Service
SMAM’s journey is a testament to the power of faith in action. It reflects the Diocese of Mangalore’s enduring commitment to living out the Gospel call to serve “the least of these.” The society’s work in the Same Diocese stands as a living example of how faith can transcend borders, bringing people together to create meaningful change.
As the mantle of leadership passes from Fr. Alwyn to Fr. Hilary, the mission’s legacy remains steadfast. SMAM is not just an organization but a movement—a symbol of the shared commitment of the Diocese of Mangalore and the communities it serves in Tanzania.
